The Pillar of Shame memorial
The “Pillars of shame” is another memorial that is in the process of being made. The memorial is going to be in the shape of the letters UN not honouring the united nations but the bosnians who suffered in the war. the letters will act as a metaphor or the betrayal of the UN as they failed to intervene and prevent the genocide fro happening. The monument will consist of two steel framed pillars in the shape of UN, the monument will stand 8,732 feet high and 16 feet wide also containing 16,744 shoes, half f which belonging to victims of the genocide. Within the two letters the will be bullet holes which will also highlight the error the UN had in preventing this genocide. The project idea was launched on May 13, 2010, they are still having issues with funding as people are very enthusiastic about the project but rarely contribute financially. The project is estimated to take around 5 years and the location was still being decided within those affected by the genocide. the Genocide will serve as a reminder to the world to never forget the disaster and tragedy that happened in Bosnia. Quote “The monument will be seen as a permanent reminder of one of the biggest betrayals in history. A permanent reminder of our (western) shame.” designer Phillip Ruch who is an activist and founder of the centre for political beauty in Berlin.
